 Chapter 10

Sitting with Adamma inside her hut, the duo pondered on what to do next.

"My father seemed immune to your powers, Adamma. What should I do since he refuse to die. I need to ascend the throne before Obinnze returns from his sudden journey".

"No poison had worked on him which is impossible. We have to involve Master in this". Adamma voiced out her thoughts.

The Dark Shadow had earlier informed the two when he came out surprisingly from Ebubedike's body about his sudden departure.

In his words 'I need to go somewhere and prepare myself for a coming battle. Ebubedike you have to get prepared for Obinnze because his coming back will be war. Think of a way to kill the King before then so that you will be crowned the next king before Obinnze's return. And this time around I can't help you with that Ebubedike for if you had seen what I saw, you would have hurry me up to where I want to go now. Adamma shall help you with whatever you need'. He told them before he disappeared into thin air.

"Of course, but will he come? It has been two years we've heard or seen him last". Ebubedike asked.

"He will come My lord, do not worry about that". Adamma said easing Ebubedike's worries.

"If you say so, tomorrow then we shall try to see if we can call upon him". Ebubedike said as he stood up from her bamboo bed. "It's late already. I better be going to my hut before my mother unexpectedly comes looking for me again". Adamma's suspicious look prompted him to continue "The other day she nearly caught me when I came out from your hut, thank the gods for my good eye sight which foresighted her and I quickly ran back to my hut". Ebubedike explained why he suddenly wants to go.

"If that is the case then, good night my Lord".

 "Good night Adamma".

With that Ebubedike left the presence of Adamma and quickly went to his hut.

True to his words his mother came visiting that night to discuss an important issue with her son.

"My son, since the return of your step brother two years ago, your father has always spoken about him. With the way I see things, I am afraid that all my fight for you to become the next king will be impossible because your father has decided to make Obinnze the next Grand King once he returns". Nnenna told her son.

"What?!! That is impossible, I am the first son of my father and in all history, the first son of a king becomes the next king, so why will my own be different?" Ebubedike demanded.

"That is what I want you to ask your father tomorrow because our people say Eze mbe si na ihe ya ji-achiri ihe egwu ya aga njem bu maka ya ezu ndiegwu- The tortoise said that it always travels with its musical instrument in case it meets other musicians".

"Father is pushing me hard to the wall, he won't like what I would do to him". Ebubedike said.

"Leave your father aside Ebubedike, the only barrier between you and the throne now is Obinnze, get rid of him or your chance of becoming the next king is thin. Remember I once told you about the prophecy the late Adamma spoke about him, try as much as possible to make sure it doesn't come to past. How can I, the Queen mother watches as the heir apparent is given to a nobody Mbanu, it can't happen in my time". Nnenna said in bitterness.

"Mother, Ka ikwo hawk nwere perch, ka ugo nweekwa perch. Ihe ọ bα»₯la dα»‹ iche iche na nke ọzọ nwere ike α»‹banye, ya nwere ike imebi nku- Let the kite hawk have a perch, and let the eagle also have a perch. Whichever begrudges the other the right to perch, may he break a wing", Ebubedike said and he added with so much confidence "Obinnze shall die that's for sure".

"Whatever decision you make now, I am strongly behind you. I on the other hand shall try and confuse your father to crown you the next Grand king". Nnenna told her son, bidding her son goodnight she left for her hut

Obinnze saw himself at a river bank which was sparkling like gold. He bent down to see if truly it was gold. He scooped some of it into his palm, and the unexpected happened. The water in his palm dried up without delay, confused and at the same time surprised by what happened he tried scooping the water and it happened again. He was so engrossed with what he was doing that he didn't see Nga behind him.

It wasn't until Nga cleared her throat and spoke that he realized he wasn't alone. He turned around as his gaze landed on Nga.

"You're in the realm of the spirit. The water dries up in your palm because you're a living being unlike me who is dead".

"Mother". Obinnze said and quickly embraced the old woman standing in his front. "I have missed you so much. I missed your elderly advice, I had wished at times for you to come back to life". The last word came out as sob and he realizes he was crying.

Panting him on his back, Nga smiled a little. "I too missed you son but it was my time and besides death happens to everyone when it is their own time. You've grown much taller and handsome, I hope Nze and the rest are treating you nice?"

"Yes Mother. Nze said Nen told him you wanted to speak with me, I have tried entering the realm of the spirit but couldn't, thank the gods I finally did". Obinnze told Nga as he shifted a little backwards to look at the old woman again. Nga reaches up to wipe off his fallen tears.

"Yes, the days ahead of you are tough my son. You have to be very cautious and alert". Nga told him with sadness plastering on her old face.

"You should know that I am always careful mother". Nga worried face frowned the more. "Why that sad look on your face?"

"I am afraid that you might lose at the end because of a silly mistake you will make". Nga finally pour out her worries.

"Mistake? What silly mistake that Obinnze would do?" Obinnze asked as he was confused.

"I can't tell you Obinnze, I was warned not to reveal it to you. You". Pointing at him. "Will have to find it out yourself. I do hope and pray to the gods of your ancestors that you should not make that mistake, it will cost you a lot my son".

"What can that be mother, at least give me a clue. A clue that is all I asked".

"It is impossible my son. Onye maara ihe niile mgbe α»₯fọdα»₯, ọ na-eji mmiri buru mmiri- One who knows everything at times, draws water with a basket. In this case Obinnze, my hands are tied".

"Okay mother, I will try as much as possible to be very alert once am back". Obinnze said.

"Until lions have their own historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter. You should know, not everything is real, some come in shape of love". Nga told him as she touched his jaw.

Nga waved her hand across his fave and Obinnze saw himself surrounded in darkness.

"Trend with caution my son, not every smiling faces means well for you".

Were the last words he heard before he saw that he was back with Nze sitting beside him.

"With the look on your face I know you spoke with Nga about the mistake you are about to make". Nze said and he saw something Obinnze flashed in his eyes.

"How did you know we discussed about that?" Obinnze asked looking at Nze suspiciously.

"I, Nga, Nen with one other knew about it and no I can't tell you also, I don't want to perish now". Nze told him.

"Why can't you tell me so that I can avoid making that mistake?"

"We are bound to an oath so we can't reveal it to you. You're to find it out yourself, but don't worry, even if I can't tell you I didn't make an oath not to help you".

"You're hopeless Nze. Since you don't want to tell me I should be heading home now, father would be getting worried about my whereabouts for the past few days".

"Two years you mean?" Nze corrected him. "Don't stare at me like I have two heads, you stayed here meditating for the past two years not days".

"It's been two years since you've trained Olaudo, is she ready for the mission Master?" Oshimmiri asked her master. They stood afar watching Olaudo practicing her sword fight with Ebuka.

"Yes, she is ready. We need her to enter Umudike at the right time".

"Then let her enter the day when the festival of OlaUdo shall take place in Umudike, she shall compete with the warriors at the wrestling ground in that way Obinnze would be enchanted by her beauty. How do you see my plan Master?"

"Perfect, in that way Olaudo shall lure Obinnze down to me. Once he is within my reach then I shall kill him and with his heart I will use it to unlock the sword Of OlaUdo. I am with the other half and Umudike is with the second half and you know I can't enter Umudike. Olaudo shall be my puppet into stealing the sword from them and bringing Obinnze to me but first, the girl (Olaudo) has to know her part in this".
