Chapter 3
That night, Ozo and his wife Ama ran towards the dreaded Oshimmiri River. The Journey to the River wasn't an easy one.
They where soon at the outskirts of Umudike and were running towards Aku kingdom when they heard the sound of footsteps coming behind them.
Looking behind them, Ozo in the pitch of the night saw a group of five young men dressed in all black, holding swords and only their eyes were seen.
"They are behind us, let's hurry up". Ozo said.
They hasten up their steps but being old they weren't fast enough. Ozo Knowing their ends where coming if they didn't act fast, he turned to face his wife Ama.
"You have to keep going on Ama, I will try my possible best to delay them". Ozo told his wife and looked back only to see how close the pursuers where catching up on them.
"No, I can't leave you now. If we are to die then let's die together". Ama reply.
"That's where you are wrong Ama, if we die here together then what would be the fate of our granddaughter whom we have sacrificed our lives for? You have to get her to Oshimmiri River. Use the short cut that leads to Oshimmiri River. You still remember the way, right?" Ozo asked as they kept running.
Ama quickly nodded her head. "Of course Nnayi I vividly remember the short cut".
"Then followed it quickly, I will try to delay them as I can. I will stop at the count of three, on no account must you stop Ama". Ozo said as he began counting. At the third count he stopped in his running and turned to face their pursuers as his wife ran away.
Ama didn't turned to know the fate of her husband, she knew her husband won't survive for long with them. With a new found strength she never knew she possess she ran towards the shortcut leading to Oshimmiri river.
Soon she once again heard the footsteps of her pursuers. She turned and saw three instead of five chasing her. Her eyes sight were good just like her husband own. Seeing the three black clothed men chasing her made her know that Ozo had killed two of them before his death. She ran and ran faster than her old age would carry.
The sound of the wind and splashing of water made her knew she was closer to Oshimmiri River and with that thought she ran faster.
She wasn't looking closely so didn't noticed in time the stem of a tree stretch on the way. She fell down as her killers quickly ran up to meet her.
"You think you can run forever old woman". One of them with a very thick voice said.
"Please I beg in The name of the gods you serve don't Kill me". Ama pleaded for her life.
"I never know any old person who can run the way this old woman did". The second one said.
Ama kept on pleading for her.
"Your stupid old husband fought us and succeeded in killing two of us before he was killed. You are not far away from death old woman. Look around you, there is no one who can save you. You are joining your husband". The third man who seemed to be their leader spoke. "Kill her". He ordered.
One of the assassin brought out his shinny sword and was about to cut of the head of Ama when a voice spoke out.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, touch her and die".
Looking around them they couldn't trace where the voice had spoken from.
"Who are you? Show us yourself if you are not a coward. Only fools hide when they see brave men". The first man said as they looked around them.
The voice laughed at the words. You couldn't distinguish if the voice belongs to a male or a female.
"Fools and brave men? I see that in you". The voice said mockery. "Like I have said before do not harm that woman and if you want to be alive you'd better turn back now". The voice added.
"Then you are coward". The third man said and gesture to Ama and ordered. "Kill her".
Before they would move to carry out the order, the two assassins hands where cut off as their heads where soon removed. A moment later their body was sent ablaze.
The man who seemed to be the leader turned frantically around him, looking at all directions.
"Show yourself and face me like a man".
Ama was looking fearfully around her. Who ever the voice is isn't here to hurt her nor the child but nevertheless she was still frightened.
A chuckle was heard.
"Humans, when will they ever learn?".
Without any further delay, the man held his throat chocking himself to death.
Seeing that they where dead, Ama sit up with the baby in her hands as she looked around her fearfully.
"Hello, please if you are still here, I beg you do not kill me".
"Do not be afraid Ama, we have been waiting for you. I was sent to rescue you and the child, though I must confess that I wasn't fast enough to save your husband". The voice spoke out.
"Who are you and who sent you to us?" Ama asked.
"I am not permitted to say the name Ama, I was only sent to bring you and the child". The voice told her
"Why can't I see you then?" Ama demanded.
"You can see me but not here. There is an old canoe beside the sea shore, enter it and go to the other side of the River".
"But no one has ever crossed Oshimmiri river before without perishing in it". Ama said wondering how she would cross the most dreaded River.
"Nothing will happen to you Ama. Like I said before we've been waiting for your arrival since, I shall be at the other side of the River waiting for you".
Picking herself up from the ground she quickly ran towards the River and just like how the voice said she saw an old canoe beside the River. Without further delay she entered the canoe and row. Just like what the voice said Oshimmiri didn't swallow the old canoe.

"Are you sure Nga picked the right one?" The female asked still adamant of Nga decision.
"You cannot question Nga. She alone knows why she choose Obinnze and we are to look after him". The male one replied back.
"If you say so but are we going to sit back and fold our arms without helping him. You know his step mother hates him so much and soon enough his brother would follow her foot. I pity the young Obinnze".
"He is not in need of our help now, we shall help him when he needs it. Let's return to our clan and tell them what we saw". The male voice said as the four red eyes disappeared.

"I want to become the Grand king of all kingdoms but how can I carry out my plans when I fully know well that he has two sons the gods had blessed him with". Igwe Aku said to himself at his hut that night as he pace around. He couldn't visit any of his wives hut but rather told them he wants to spend the night alone in his hut.
"If I ask the other two kingdoms to help me achieve my aim I might be betrayed or who knows if they also desire the throne like me".
He sat down.
"What can I use against the Grand king, he is so secretive". He pondered in thoughts.
All through the night he wondered what to do.
He must become the Grand King at all cost.

"So what should I do mama?"
"If I where in your shoe my son, I will kill Obinnze". Nnenna whispered into her son ear.
"Tufiakwa mama, may the gods forbid it. I can't kill my only brother because of a throne". Ebubedike said rejecting the idea. "I will have to find another way".

Getting to the other side of the River, she saw three people waiting for her. They where all covering their faces
The middle person walked up to her. Removing the veil from it's face to reveal a stunning lady.
"I told you Nothing would happen". The beautiful lady said as she smiled at Ama.
Ama quickly recognized the voice as the same voice she had encountered at the other side.
Removing the veil off her face had made her voice looked more feminine.
"I still don't get the reason why you decided to help me". Ama said.
"We aren't helping only you Ama, we were helping your grand child also. Her destiny is a great one and we were created to guide her path and for her to rule over us". The lady answered.
"Okay, you know my name but I don't know yours, can you please tell me your name at least". Ama said wanting to know more about the stunning lady in front of her.
The lady smiled. "Those two behind me are Ebuka and Obinna". The lady said Introducing the two veiled men behind her.
They nodded their heads in turn when she introduced them.
"And what about you?"
"I am called Oshimmiri the most dreaded River".
